|Description:||This person assists the news editor in overseeing the work of the universal desk, which produces edited copy and other content for print and online. This manager consistently applies a high level of judgment in processing content in a way that meets audience and brand goals of The Tennessean. The chief produce helps manage producers, coaches staff, helps edit and slot copy, writes and vets headlines, ensures timely digital delivery of content, handles schedules and helps proof work.|
|Duties:||Helps oversee daily production flow of content in print and online. Assigns print and digital work. Ensures copy (stories, graphics, cutlines, postings, etc.) is read for accuracy, style, fairness, spelling, grammar, math literacy, legal knowledge and context. Ensures headlines are well written, precise and artful and cutlines add information for the reader. Helps determine a strong mix of story choices on section fronts or in special presentations based on audience interests and organizational goals.|
Coaches staff to help them meet high standards for editing and selection of content as well as headline writing in print and online. Ensures all staff are trained in appropriate platforms. Helps them use site catalyst to determine traffic patterns and adjust content accordingly. Ensures social networking, e-letters and text messages are used to push content.
Schedules staff to meet goals of news organization and to ensure appropriate coverage.
Helps with reports, job performance reviews, and other tasks assigned by the news editor.
|Qualifications:||College degree and at least 5 years previous journalism experience (including editing and writing headlines) at a daily news operation. Previous management experience preferred. |
This job requires technical proficiency and understanding of all The Tennessean's platforms.
This individual should regularly demonstrate a high level of innovation and leadership. Strong editing skills relating to all types of news, features and sports content are critical.
Excellent knowledge of potential libel issues is essential.
